Intro[]
The fourth VIKING tournament, was one of the five VIKING specials that took place in 2006 and the only one that involves individual competitors. The course would have a different gimmick compared to its previous Individual tournaments. In this tournament, it consisted of mixes of head-to-head challenges and timed stages similar to the SASUKE Trials. Instead of the usual 100 competitors attempting the course, 70 competitors were invited to the tournament, dividing them into 35 matchups.
In the First Marine Stage, five new obstacles were introduced in the course. Due to the new format with competitors competing head-to-head, they could continue attempting the course despite falling or touching the water. This rule would be exempted on Parley in which competitors could only have two attempts to clear, failing to do so would result in a disqualification. There was a time limit which was 180 seconds, with the clock counting upwards across all stages. Competitors had to complete the course within the time limit and/or faster than their opponent in their own respective matchup, whichever was earlier. If both competitors did not complete the course on time, both would be eliminated. In addition, six additional places for competitors across all matchups with the fastest times that completed the course slower than their opponent in their respective matchup would move on to the Second Adventure Stage. Due to this format, along with 22 winning competitors, 28 competitors would move on to the Second Adventure Stage.
The Second Adventure Stage would introduce only one obstacle called Hammer Road, a long course 50 meters in length and 20 hammers. Competitors would draw lots that resulted in their new matchups. Similar to the previous stage, competitors had to complete the course within the time limit and/or faster than their opponent in their own respective matchup, whichever was earlier. However, they were automatically eliminated once they fell on the obstacle. The time limit to complete the course was 75 seconds. As a result, only 11 competitors managed to move on to the Third Fantasy Stage due to some competitors rushing through the course trying to catch up with their opponent or making up lost time, losing their balance. In addition, some collided with the hammer along the way or touched the hammer with their hands resulting in disqualification.
In the Third Fantasy Stage, classic VIKING obstacles such as Castaway, Swing Mast, and Cannonball would be moved to this stage. Similar to the previous stage, competitors would once again draw lots that would result in their new matchups. Since there were an odd number of competitors attempting the stage, one competitor would attempt the stage on his own compared to the rest of the competitors. The time limit was 120 seconds. Similar to the previous stage, they were automatically eliminated once they fell on the obstacle. However, competitors only needed to complete the course in their own respective matchup thus both competitors could earn a chance to move on to the Final Viking. The Swing Mast eliminated most of the competitors in this stage and thus only 4 competitors remained.
The Final Viking was a drastic change compare to the previous tournament, which consist of only one obstacle in a tower form known as Hashigo Nobori. This stage was a time trail therefore there would only be one winner for the competitor who completed the obstacle in the fastest time, and it was Sato Hiromichi. This tournament would be important, as Nagano Makoto would achieve kanzenseiha in SASUKE 17, which was aired 8 days after VIKING 4, and Miyake Ayako had achieved her third kanzenseiha in KUNOICHI 6, which was aired 13 days before VIKING 4, making 2006 the first and only year where a kanzenseiha was achieved in both SASUKE, VIKING and KUNOICHI.
However, due to renewing the VIKING course being too expensive, the show sadly came to its cancelation on March 2007.
