The Gallon Throw (ザ・ガロンスロー) is an event that has made an appearance exclusively in most Pro Sportsman Tournaments and has been one of the more notable events due to its special appearances.
The event itself involves the competitor facing behind a wall, throwing a 10kg barrel upwards. Once the barrel manages to go up and over the wall, the competitor advances to the next round in which the wall's height will increase. During the main tournament, competitors can continue to attempt The Gallon Throw until they fail a total of two times.
Over the tournaments the material of the barrel would change. From its debut on Pro Sportsman No. 1 1996 to Pro Sportsman No. 1 2001, the barrel was made from wood. From Pro Sportsman No. 1 2002 onwards, the barrel is now made from metal. In addition, every competitor was provided with protective gear such as helmets for safety purposes.
Although this event emphasizes on power, technique is also needed. No matter how powerful a competitor throws the barrel, if they get the timing and angle wrong, the barrel may not go over the wall. There have been many cases in which competitors threw the barrel higher than the wall but still failed because they could not get the barrel over the wall.
The World Record for the highest level of The Gallon Throw cleared stands at 8m 25cm which is held by Murofushi Koji. The record for the highest level of The Gallon Throw made by a celebrity stands at 5m 25cm which is held by Kane Kosugi, while the record for the highest level of The Gallon Throw made in the main tournament stands at 6m 50cm by Brian Clay.
This event would appear in eight Pro Sportsman Tournaments.
Special Events[]
Throughout the tournaments, The Gallon Throw would also appear in special events outside of the main battle and tournaments of the show.
The Gallon Throw World Championship (樽投げ世界一決定戦) is a special event held during Pro Sportsman Tournaments. This event involves track and field athletes of hammer throw and shot put who have participated in the World Athletics and Olympic Games. The initial height of the wall is also set higher than the event itself. In addition, competitors can attempt the event until they fail twice in the same height. This makes it easier for competitors to have higher levels in this event compared to the actual event. The first event was held in Pro Sportsman No. 1 2002, and all participants broke the previous world record of 6m 20cm.
It was originally planned for The Gallon Throw to be the sixth and final event of the 1st Celebrity Sportsman No. 1. But right after the fourth event, Dead Man's Drop, the competitors were too fatigued to continue the last two events. This led for The Gallon Throw to be scrapped and put Shot-Gun Touch as the final event of the Survival Battle.
Despite that, there would be instances in which The Gallon Throw would appear in Celebrity Sportsman No. 1 as a special battle.
