The Speed Climbing (スピードクライミング) is an obstacle, firstly introduced as the first obstacle of the Final Stage of SASUKE 39, replacing the Spider Climb. The obstacle is essentially a wall with large red rock climbing artifacts on it, in which competitors must climb the wall, 8.5 meters in height, and climb atop to advance to the next obstacle, the Salmon Ladder Jūgo Dan.
While the obstacle was similar in function to the Free Climbing and Kabe Nobori from the early competitions of SASUKE, the rock wall is designed for speed climbing, hence the name, and has a different shape of holds and orientation in the wall. As a side note, it could be considered as a supersized version of the Dai Zeppeki and Climb Board from KUNOICHI.
In the first parts of the wall, the handholds are arranged in a zig-zag formation. As competitors go higher up the wall, the holds shift to a v-shaped formation.
Compared to other first obstacles in the Final Stage, it is not possible for competitors to transit immediately to the next obstacle, as there is a large gap between the last pair of handholds to the top of the wall that also has an additional gap for room in attempting the Salmon Ladder Jūgo Dan. This likewise increases the transition time in-between obstacles, wasting valuable time in completing the Final Stage as a whole.
