American Ninja Warrior 14's Serpent

American Ninja Warrior 14's Serpent

The Serpent is an obstacle, firstly introduced as part of the Split Decision in the first and second episodes of qualifiers on American Ninja Warrior 14. In both times, it was paired with the Domino Effect.

Competitors must run across four freely-rotating cylinders arranged in a zig-zag. Each cylinder was divided into three sections, making it hard for the competitors to maintain their balance overall.

This obstacle is similar to Log Runner, in which competitors must run across a series of spinning logs. Compared to that obstacle, the logs on the Serpent are arranged in a zig-zag formation, with one end of the first log being connected to the next log, forming a shape of a serpent. In addition, the connecting joints of the obstacle are suspended by cables, rendering the obstacle much more unstable.

During the first episode of qualifiers, competitors heavily favored the Domino Effect. For those who did attempt the Serpent, it was brutal, eliminating top competitors like David Wright and Allyssa Beird. It was revealed in the next episode of the qualifiers that only six competitors attempted the obstacle, and four failed on it, resulting in a staggeringly high 66% failure rate. In addition to Wright and Beird, the other two competitors that failed the obstacle that night were Mark Pressley and Melia Ochsner. Meanwhile, Casey Rothschild and Ronald Washington were the only two competitors that night to succesfully complete it.

However, on the second episode of qualifiers, more competitors attempted the Serpent. As a result, there were more completions, including Joe Moravsky. However, many competitors were unable to cleanly dismount the obstacle. It still proved to be quite challenging, eliminating 7 competitors that night. Among these competitors were competitors such as Wes Meador, Jonas Harmer, Adam Nasser, and Conor Galvin. Most shockingly however, this obstacle eliminated Jessie Graff, which would mark her earliest exit during the regular season.

Trivia[]

  • It was revealed via Anthony Storm (the showrunner and executive producer of American Ninja Warrior for A. Smith & Co. Productions) that this obstacle was one of the obstacles that won the American Ninja Warrior: Obstacle Design Challenge.
  • At the time of its appearance in ANW 14, the obstacle eliminated 2 out of 3 female competitors who had made it to Stage 2 in ANW, as both Jessie Graff and Allyssa Beird were eliminated by the obstacle. Jesse Labreck was the only one of the three who did not attempt the obstacle in the qualifier round.
