Sean McColl is a professional rock climber who competed in several international tournaments of American Ninja Warrior.

Personal life[]

McColl was originally born in Vancouver, Canada, but moved to Chambery, France, since rock climbing wasn't big in Canada. In 2012, he won the Climbing World Championships in Men's Combined. In 2014 and 2016, he won the Climbing World Cup in Men's Combined. He represented Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.

In the competition, Sean put on an amazing performance. He first went up in the Second Stage against Kanno Hitoshi and Elet Hall. In that heat, Kanno failed Rope Jungle while Hall finished in 2:06.32. In the stage, McColl flew through the first four obstacles easily. On the Metal Spin, McColl did a unique technique by leaping off the chain onto the landing platform. McColl finished in 1:46.51, easily winning his heat.

He then went against Brian Arnold and Matachi Ryo in Stage Three. After Ryo cleared the stage with a time of 5:04.67, McColl went up to the stage. McColl flew through the first seven obstacles reaching the Flying Bar in just two minutes and 35 seconds. However, on the third jump, he wasn't able to get the right side of the bar even to the left side and fell into the water. Unfortunately, Brian Arnold finished the stage and took the tournament to the Final Stage.

McColl went against Travis Rosen in the Final Stage. Rosen completed the stage in 35.77 seconds. McColl was able to best that by .31 seconds, winning the tournament for Europe.

American Ninja Warrior: USA vs. The World 2[]

McColl returned in 2016 to compete for Team Europe in the second tournament of USA vs the World. In the competition, he once again competed in the Second and Third Stages. On the Second Stage, McColl went against Takahashi Kenji and Joe Moravsky. In that heat, Takahashi failed the Double Salmon Ladder while Joe posted a Second Stage speed record of 1:23.69. McColl demolished that record by 4 seconds finishing with an impeccable time of 1:19.86, winning the heat for Team Europe. Then, in the newly redesigned Third Stage, McColl competed against Morimoto Yusuke of Team Japan and reigning American Ninja Warrior champion Isaac Caldiero. After Morimoto completed the stage with a time of 6:29.38, McColl maneuvered through the seven obstacles at a steady pace. Then, he managed to avenge his fall on the Flying Bar from the last tournament and complete the stage with a time of 5:42.45. Unfortunately, he lost his heat to Issac who finished the stage with a tremendous time of 4:28.84. As a result, Team USA won the tournament.

It is also shown that he watched Brian Arnold's City Finals run in Kansas City in American Ninja Warrior 7.

American Ninja Warrior: USA vs. The World 3[]

McColl made his third appearance for Team Europe in the third tournament of USA vs the World. For a third consecutive year, McColl competed in Stage 2 and Stage 3. In Stage 2, McColl went up against Brian Arnold of Team USA and Diego Gonzalez of Team Latin America. In that round, even though Gonzalez failed the Wave Runner and Arnold failed the Double Wedge, McColl obliterated all six obstacles, easily winning his heat.

On the final round of Stage 3, McColl competed against Diego Gonzalez of Team Latin America and Drew Drechsel of Team USA. With the championship trophy on the line, McColl took a very risky approach by trying to complete the stage as fast as he can. He executed his plan by clearing first three obstacles at a relatively quick pace. Without taking an adequate amount of rest, McColl decided to continue his tactic and quickly attempt the Curved Body Prop. His plan eventually backfired as he couldn't reach the Hang Climb due to fatigue and failed. As a result, he lost the heat to Drew Drechsel (who defeated the stage), costing Team Europe its second straight defeat in the tournament.

American Ninja Warrior: USA vs. The World 4[]

Sean returned to compete in the 2017 version of USA vs the World. He made history on Team Europe, as this was his fourth time being on Team Europe, beating Team USA’s Brian Arnold’s three appearances and being one behind Team USA’s Drew Drechsel’s five appearances.

Sean competed in the second heat on Stage 2 after seeing Najee Richardson complete the course minutes before. In order to beat Team Asia and stay alive in the competition, Sean had to beat the Criss Cross Salmon Ladder faster than Team Asia’s Yosua Laskaman Zalukhu. He wound up finishing the Stage 2 course faster than Richardson, winning the heat for Team Europe, and thus keeping them alive in the competition.

It came down to Team USA vs Team Europe on the final showdown on Stage 4. It was a battle of the Seans: Sean McColl vs Sean Bryan. Sean Bryan got off to a slow start while Sean McColl flew up the rope to get to the top first, winning it for Team Europe for the second time.

Sean McColl shockingly was not chosen for Team Europe for either vs the World competition in Season 10 or Season 11 on American Ninja Warrior, but that could have something to do with the 2020 Olympics.
