SASUKE 42 (officially, 「SASUKE2024」) was officially announced by TBS via Twitter and a trailer posted on the official SASUKE YouTube channel on April 13, 2024. It is the fourth tournament after Morimoto Yūsuke's second kanzenseiha. This is the first ever SASUKE tournament to air on Christmas Day at 6pm JST with a time slot of approximately five hours and ten minutes. Similar to the previous tournament, it features a collaboration with the alcoholic beverage company KIRIN. The logo of the company was displayed on a blue banner hanged on the side of the Final Stage tower instead of the gold banner, similar to SASUKE World Cup 1.
Applications[]
The applications were announced on April 13, 2024, on their Official Website and Twitter. The deadline for the applications was on July 28, 2024. Similar to the previous year, the applications intended for senior high school students known as SASUKE Koshien 2 (SASUKE甲子園2024) was released on April 24, 2024, on their Official Website and Twitter. The deadline for the applications was initially on July 14, 2024, later extended to July 31, 2024, with a similar format to the previous Koshien. In addition, the application of the SASUKE Trials was separately announced on August 27, 2024, and the deadline is slated for September 8, 2024.
Special auditions were held in September 2024 for various general public members and each of them had to undergo two rounds. The first round consisted of a 30-seconds self-introduction and doing 100 push-ups with a voice cue, follow up by the second round with an interview for the selected applicants. Likewise, there was another audition featuring various comedians and celebrities, which were also held in the same month and they attempted a course consisting of the Godantobi and a bar simulating the Dragon Glider known as Bar Catch, follow up by an interview. For the former audition, Matsuda Daisuke, Ban Nakamura, Tokunan Kenta, Sasaki Takumi, Okada Yudai, Tachibana Tsubasa, Shimamoto Kokoro, Nakamura Kotaro and many more were selected to compete in this tournament while for the latter audition, REINA, Aoki Macho, Kajita Hiroki, Kinoshita Danhi and many more were selected to compete in this tournament.
Trials[]
This year, the trials for this tournament increased with the return of the SASUKE Trials and SASUKE Koshien, along with the debut of the SASUKE Idols Trials (SASUKEアイドル予選会―出場権争奪バトル―). The idol trials took place on October 7, 2024, at 6:30pm JST at the Kashiwa City Central Gymnasium.
500 competitors who competed in the SASUKE 42 Trials underwent six qualifying stages for a chance to compete in the tournament. The trials aired on TVer from November 13 to November 18, 2023. After six grueling stages, Imoto Yasuhito, Inagaki Shohei, Matsumura Kohei were qualified by completing the Last Stage with the fastest times. In addition, Uemura Takumi and Arakawa Yohei were successful in the repechage audition and thus qualified. For the idol trials, after four grueling stages, Ito Miki qualified by earning the most number of points and Iwamoto Riko qualified as a wildcard due to her performance throughout the trials. Later, the Koshien has aired on BS-TBS at December 21, 2024 as a two-hour special. After three grueling stages, Suzuki Yukinari, Takahashi Toki and Oba Rio from Natori High School were qualified.
Filming[]
According to the official TBS's news page, the taping took place on October 26 to October 27, 2024, with the First Stage taking place on October 26 to October 27 while any possible runs for the Second, Third or Final Stage may possibly be held on October 27, 2024.
Tournament Summary[]
There are several competitors who have not competed in SASUKE for a long time finally returned to SASUKE to compete in this tournament, including:
- Mizuno Yūko, who competed for the first time since SASUKE 14 after an unofficial appearance in the first SASUKE World Cup.
- SASUKE 12 finalist Shiratori Bunpei, who competed for the first time since SASUKE 30.
The First Stage introduces a brand-new obstacle, Screwdriver, which replaced the Silk Slider, and the Fish Bone was modified to have four additional bars, for a total of 37 bars, further narrowing the gap in between the fourth and fifth pedestal. The time limit remained unchanged from the previous tournament and the same goes for the female competitors, signifying the unprecedented tenth tournament to have a time limit difference and the first time to do so in seven consecutive tournaments. There was notable failures across the course such as:
- Shiratori Bunpei failed the Fish Bone.
- Yamada Katsumi and Oshima Ayano failed the Twin Dia,
- Darvish Kenji, Iwamoto Hikaru, Takeru, Kane Kosugi (losing his perfect First Stage clear streak), Yamamoto Shingo, and Nagano Makoto failed the Dragon Glider, and
- Yamashita Yuta and Wasabi timed out on the Soritatsu Kabe.
In the end, 28 competitors completed the First Stage (the third highest amount of First Stage completions in SASUKE history) including:
- Sato Jun cleared the First Stage for the thirteenth time in a row,
- Sugeta Rinne cleared for the first time since SASUKE 39,
- Takasuka Hayato, Suzuki Yusuke, and Kawaguchi Tomohiro all avenged their First Stage failure from the previous tournament,
- Kanno Hitoshi cleared for the first time since SASUKE 31,
- Uemura Takumi and Imoto Yasuhito from the SASUKE Trials, and
- Olivia Vivian became the fifth female to clear the First Stage.
The Second Stage had remained unchanged, at least course wise, while the time limit was reduced by 5 seconds, marking the first time since SASUKE 29 in which the time limit was less than 100 seconds. Due to this, there was a spread of fails among various competitors, such as:
- Uemura Takumi, Nagano Kaiou, Matachi Ryo, Nagasaki Shunsuke, Satō Jun, and Olivia Vivian failed the Rolling Log mainly due to heavy rainfall during certain periods, the log was stuck and there were many cases of it stopping midway during the tournament,
- Kajita Hiroki failed the Salmon Ladder Nobori,
- Saikawa Kōji failed the Spider Run, marking the fifth time that he failed the stage,
- Imoto Yasuhito, Sugeta Rinne, and Kanno Hitoshi failed the Reverse Conveyor, and
- Suzuki Yusuke timed out on the Wall Lifting.
Despite these fails, the record number of competitors clearing the Second Stage was broken yet again for the unprecedented third consecutive time, as sixteen competitors cleared the stage, the highest in SASUKE history, such as:
- Uchimiya Shuzo avenged his previous Second Stage failure,
- Four of the five members of the Morimoto Sedai,
- Urushihara Yuuji once again broke his own record as the oldest competitor to clear the Second Stage at the age of 46, and
- All three of the Black Tiger members: Takasuka Hayato, Yamamoto Yoshiyuki, and Nakashima Yuta that broke the record as the youngest competitor to clear the Second Stage at the age of 16, making him the first teenager to do so.
As such, this tournament become one of the few tournaments that both the oldest and youngest Second Stage clear is broken.
The Third Stage had the Swing Edge modified in which the second set of handles was replaced by a Y-shaped frame. The stage was once again formidable as while only Uchimiya failed on the Sidewinder, the modified Swing Edge took out six of the fifteen competitors who attempted it, with Kajihara Hayate, Takasuka Hayato, Hioki Masashi, and SASUKE 40 finalist Yamamoto Yoshiyuki failing the first transition while Yamamoto Keitaro and Kawaguchi Tomohiro failed the second transition. The Cliff Dimension eliminated five competitors; Mutou Tomohiro failed the first transition while Nakashima Yuta, Araki Naoyuki, Daniel Gil, and Urushihara Yuuji failed the second transition. The Vertical Limit Burst eliminated three of the four competitors who attempted it, with each of the failures occurring at different zones: Iliann Cherif failed on the first yellow zone, Tada Tatsuya failed on the second red zone, and two-time grand champion Morimoto Yusuke once again failed on the second yellow zone. This left Miyaoka Ryosuke as the sole competitor that cleared the Vertical Limit Burst and the Third Stage as a whole, becoming the first competitor since SASUKE 40 to attempt the Final Stage.
In his first appearance on the Final Stage, Miyaoka had a slow start on the Speed Climbing and he did not hasten his pace on the Salmon Ladder Jugo Dan, he ended up timing out at the beginning of the Tsuna Nobori, marking the fourth tournament in the row without a Kanzenseiha.
