Intro

The SASUKE 40 Trials are a series of preliminary events designed to test people for SASUKE. From over 5000 applicants, 500 were chosen to compete in the trials, the largest number of competitors in the SASUKE Trials to date since SASUKE 13 Trials. From those 500, they would compete in five different qualifying rounds where the number of competitors would decrease as the rounds progress. In the Last Stage, the top ten remaining competitors would race through a First Stage replica for a chance to compete in SASUKE 40. The broadcast aired in a span of five episodes from November 12 to 17, 2022 except on November 14, 2022 on a streaming service TVer hosted by Sugiyama Shinya with Sato Kaede, Ito Riria, Urushihara Yuuji, and Hioki Masashi as guests.

Qualifying First Stage

500 competitors would be grouped into five colored groups of 100 competitors competed in a survival event known as Endless Udetatefuse (エンドレス腕立て伏せ). This stage has a similar function to The Final Push-Up. From there, each colored group were subdivided into ten small sections of 10 competitors led by a known SASUKE competitor:

• Red Group is led by Yamamoto Shingo,
• Green Group is led by Kawaguchi Tomohiro,
• Purple Group is led by Urushihara Yuuji,
• Orange Group is led by Matachi Ryo, and
• Blue Group is led by Hioki Masashi.

Competitors would attempt to do as many push-ups as possible following the beat of the taiko drum, trying to outlast one another. The remaining 20 competitors from each colored group, totaling to an amount of 100 competitors, would advance to the next stage.

Qualifying Second Stage

100 remaining competitors are grouped based on their colored groups competed in an event known as Jigoku No Jikyūsō (地獄の持久走). Each group would undergo three races along a 2-lap, 500m marathon. After completing a race, all competitors would rest for within a minute which begun on the first competitor that complete each race. In other words, when competitors completes a race fast, they have more time to rest and vice versa for being slow. Each race eliminate five competitors in the first, another five in the second and two competitors in the third and final race. This stage has a similar function to Tail Impossible, a notable Sportsman event.

The remaining 8 competitors from each colored group, totaling to an amount of 40 competitors, would advance to the next stage.

Qualifying Third Stage

40 remaining competitors were paired into matchups by lottery regardless of colored group, competed in an event known as Tire Oshi (タイヤ押し). Each competitor would push a 50 kg tire along a 30 m inclined track. As a side note, both tires was taped in red and white respectively and the tires must be completely pushed over the finish line. 20 winners from each matchup, would advance to the next stage.

Qualifying Fourth Stage

20 remaining competitors were paired into matchups by lottery regardless of colored group, competed in an event known as Beach Flags (ビーチフラッグス), a notable event in Sportsman. The event involves competitors laying down flat on their stomachs facing behind the track. Once a whistle is blown, they must stand up and run across the 20 m track to grab a flag. 10 winners from each matchup, would advance to the Last Stage.

Qualifying Last Stage

10 remaining competitors known as finalists would attempt a First Stage replica with a time trial format. Through a lottery, the running order of the competitors were drawn. At least three competitors who managed to clear this stage the fastest would be awarded a chance to compete in SASUKE 40.
