American Ninja Warrior 16's Pizza Party in Stage Three
Closeup view of Pizza Party, shown during Daniel Gil's run
Pizza Party is an obstacle, firstly introduced as the fifth obstacle of Stage Three in American Ninja Warrior 16, replacing the Pipe Dream from its past four recent appearances. It is also the only new obstacle introduced during the National Finals of the same season.
This obstacle consists of two stationary bars and a "pizza slice" placed after each bar. A slice is a disk shaped like a slice of pizza, which consists of two small handholds placed on each side of the slice. Each slice also had a a ledge around its circumference, called the "crust," which competitors were not allowed to touch (which was proven when Jackson Twait got yelled at during his run). Each pizza slice was angled downards, with its apex pointing towards the pool of water below and so its crust facing skywards.
Competitors must leap to a bar and lache to the crust of a pizza slice. They must then rotate the slice 180 degrees clockwise mid-air and grab the small ledges. They will then have to repeat this process with the second pizza slice to complete the obstacle. Each pizza swings left and right to further disrupt the competitor's momentum.
This obstacle proved to be challenging as it took out six ninjas including Elijah Browning, Josiah Pippel, Sean Bryan, Austin Gray (in his final ANW appearance), Sam Folsom, and Jackson Twait. It also indirectly caused Daniel Gil to fail the Road Signs, as he used a lot of his grip strength on that obstacle.
Trivia[]
The prototype design of the Pizza Party, in which Kevin Brekke submitted for the American Ninja Warrior: Obstacle Design Challenge
- Each pizza slice is designed after a popular pizza topping. The first slice is designed after a Margherita (tomato slices and basil) pizza with olives, and on the second is designed after a pepperoni pizza. This design is printed on both sides of the pizza.
- This obstacle originally featured the wall from its predecessor, Pipe Dream. Competitors had to leap to the wall before jumping to the first stationary bar, although it is unknown as to whether or not competitors had to use a stationary bar to reach the top of the wall. This feature was ultimately removed.
- Pizza Party won the American Ninja Warrior: Obstacle Design Challenge, and it was designed by Kevin Brekke. He originally intended for each pizza slice to be placed vertically (similar to Padlock). The final iteration placed the slices at an angle.
- This was the last obstacle that Brekke would create for the show.
- Philip Scott is credited with giving the obstacle its current name. The obstacle was originally called "Slice It Up".
- Pizza Party was originally planned to appear in the first section of Stage 2 of Ninja Warrior France 9 as the fifth obstacle, but was ultimately replaced by the Wingnuts for unknown reason. A footage of Pizza Party in Ninja Warrior France 9 can be seen in an Instagram video by Isaac Estevez.
