Intro[]
As with the previous tournaments, Pair VIKING 3 (officially,「夏休み熱血家族大集合 バイキングスペシャル 真夏のブレイブストーリー2006」) is where two competitors, typically family members, working together as a pair to complete the course. It was aired on July 26, 2006. It was the first tournament after Oji Hirofumi & Oji Kaito second kanzenseiha and Sato Hiromichi & Sato Fumiya kanzenseiha. Similar to the previous tournament, competitors were notified with two tasks in the lead up of this tournament, albeit with a major change:
- Practice with stilts, pogo sticks or unicycle and utilize them for the Shukudai Road.
- Practice addition problems for the Keisan Area ・Parley, moved to the First Marine Stage.
The number of applicants for this tournament was revealed to be 3011 groups, out of all of them 80 groups were selected for this tournament.
In the First Marine Stage, other than the aforementioned, the number of obstacles was increased to ten and the time limit was drastically increased by thirty nine seconds to 150 seconds compared to the previous tournament, possibly due to the poor results from the previous tournament. Among them are two Shukudai obstacles: Keisan Area ・Parley and Shukudai Road. Both obstacles require large amount of practice in the lead up of the tournament in order to excel on the course. Furthermore, the stage went through a major overhaul with five new obstacles introduced, among all the Super Diving and Keisan Area ・Parley is unique.
Super Diving requires a competitor to untie a wooden bar tied underneath the water 1.4 meters deep that the group will need in order to attempt the Kōsoku Slider, albeit the group needs to complete Kabe Nobori first. On the other hand, Keisan Area ・Parley underwent a major change and was split into two parts:
- The first part being memorizing the answer to an addition problem after a competitor pressed the buzzer. The group would climb a spiral staircase and attempts the Lifeboat without capsizing.
- The second part comes after clearing the Lifeboat as one competitor would run towards the number pad and key in the correct answer, as per the original the wrong answer would open the trapdoor.
Despite the slight increase of difficulty, the course has seen more clears compared to the previous tournament by achieving the most amount of clears of the First Marine Stage to date with six groups. As a side note, the number of clears in this tournament was doubled from the previous two tournaments combined (three groups). Even though the Kōsoku Slider has eliminated a lot of groups, more competitors gradually progressed closer to clear the course, some unfortunately timed out during the process. In addition, Oji Hirofumi & Oji Nanami shockingly failed at the Shukudai Road, with Nanami cried profusely after her run. As a result, only five more groups were chosen to move on to the Second Adventure Stage, with the Survival Climb serving as the cut-off for this tournament.
The Second Adventure Stage consists of eleven groups attempting the stage where groups are tied together using elastic ropes reverted back to 2 metres long in a similar fashion of Nakama from Kinniku Banzuke throughout. The stage went through a minor change with two new obstacles, the Futarinori Jitensha and Water Wall. The time limit remains unchanged. As a side note, the Futarinori Jitensha is the smaller version of the Dream Bridge from the Third Fantasy Stage that relocated the Keisan Area ・Parley to the First Marine Stage. Similar to the previous tournament, the new obstacles proved to be a threat as Futarinori Jitensha eliminated some groups. The Pair Bank shockingly took out Sase Masayuki & Sase Natsuki, and Sato Hiromichi & Sato Fumiya once again timed out at the Dashutsu Pole albeit with good weather as a fact that both group had made it to the Final Viking in the previous tournament. As a result, two groups completed the stage and moved on straight to the Final Viking.
Before the commencement of the Final Viking, a Category 4 Typhoon struck Kumejima, Okinawa. Sadly, Filming has to be suspended for safety reasons and was postponed. However, as the weather got better after a day, the producers decided to begin filming. Due to the double kanzenseiha in the previous tournament, the stage is moderately overhauled with a total of two obstacles. The Untei & Keisan Area where groups will once again need to work as one to navigate through a monkey bar course and solve addition and subtraction problems to open four gates. Next, the modified Victory Balanço as groups would swing to the landing platform together to achieve Kanzenseiha. The time limit remains unchanged. Ogawa Takeshi & Ogawa Mai has made it to the third section of the Untei & Keisan Area while Kudo Junichiro & Kudo Megumu has made a little further by navigating towards the final section, leaving the Victory Balanço untouched as both groups may likely timed out had they completed the Untei & Keisan Area.
