Intro[]
Pair VIKING 2 (officially,「春休み熱血家族集合 史上最強の海筋肉王 バイキングスペシャル 親子&夫婦&ペア限定 春休みプレミアム版」) returns with the format where two competitors, typically family members, working together as a pair to complete the course. It was aired on April 1, 2006. It was the first tournament after Oji Hirofumi & Oji Kaito kanzenseiha. Similar to the previous tournament, competitors were notified with two tasks in the lead up of this tournament, this time with a minor change:
- Instead of stilts only, competitors are to practice with stilts, pogo sticks or unicycle and utilize them for the Shukudai Road, modified from the Bamboo Road
- Memorize the 47 Prefectures of Japan with a map for the Yonjūnana Todōfuken
With an uptick of the number of groups, 180 competitors were selected for the tournament, dividing them into 90 groups.
In the First Marine Stage, despite the Kanzenseiha and other than the aforementioned, the number of obstacles and the time limit remained unchanged compared to the previous tournament and among them are two Shukudai obstacles: The Yonjūnana Todōfuken and Shukudai Road. Both obstacles require large amount of practice in the lead up of the tournament in order to excel on the course. In addition, the floating platform of the Rendezvous Run and the landing platform of the Kōsoku Slider was modified. As if not worse enough, bad weather occurred and persists on the entire stage, making the course extremely slick akin to the weather condition in the Second Adventure Stage from the previous tournament.
As a result, the course has proven to be extremely difficult across all groups, it has eliminated all of the groups except Oji Hirofumi & Oji Kaito, the last group to run which achieved kanzenseiha in the previous tournament. With that in mind, it breaks the record of a stage in Pair VIKING's history that took the most group to be the very first clear with 89 groups and the least amount of clears of the First Marine Stage to date. As usual, the Unga Watashi and the Kōsoku Slider has caused havoc across all groups as most competitors are not able to stick the landing. The Shukudai Road, Pole Stretch and Angle Thirty-five has also eliminated a lot of groups with timeouts. Possibly due to only one group clears the stage, an unprecedented nineteen other groups were chosen to move on to the Second Adventure Stage, with the Shukudai Road serving as the cut-off similarly to the previous tournament.
The Second Adventure Stage consists of twenty groups attempting the stage where groups are tied together using elastic ropes increased to 2.4 metres long in a similar fashion of Nakama from Kinniku Banzuke throughout. The stage received moderate changes and three new obstacles were introduced, the W Balance Run was replaced with the Pair Bank, the Big Dive was replaced with Jungle Rope and the Rolling Road was replaced by the Hurdle Nihombashi. The time limit difference from the previous tournament was removed and every group attempts the course with 140 seconds. While the Hammer Road eliminated some competitors, the new obstacles proved to be the menace on the course especially the Pair Bank which eliminated seven groups, the most out of all obstacles in the stage. Despite against all odds, three groups completed the stage, the most amount of Second Adventure Stage clears in Pair VIKING's history to date.
A new stage taken from individual VIKING which is the Third Fantasy Stage. Similar to its original counterpart, the stage only consists of one obstacle, the Dream Bridge. The stage consists of a long, narrow beam 45cm wide and 30 metres long where groups would need to ride a tandem bicycle in order to cross to the other side. There is no time limit. As a result, all groups completed the stage with little to no struggles and moved on to the Semi Final. With that in mind, this is the first tournament since VIKING 2 that has a 100% clear rate on the Third Fantasy Stage.
In Kumejima, Okinawa where the remaining two stages took place, the Semi Final is a brand new stage that was unveiled exclusively for Pair VIKING. Even so, the course merely consisted three obstacles which appeared at the Final Viking in the previous tournament. Compared to the previous tournament, the Victory Bridge was modified with a wall blocking the competitor's way and the time limit is reduced to 50 seconds. As a result, the stage proved to be easy as all groups cleared with time to spare and two groups done so with more than ten seconds remaining. Sato Hiromichi & Sato Fumiya completed it with the fastest time at 17.25 seconds remaining. The Semi Final only appeared in this tournament and the only Pair VIKING exclusive stage that has a 100% clear rate.
As the Final Viking appeared in the previous tournament is already in use, the Final Viking was overhauled. It consists of only one obstacle, the Kadōshiki Untei where groups will need to work as one to navigate through a monkey bar course consisted a total of ten fixed yellow bars and two groups of four loose silver bars bounded together with a rope. Once the competitor reaches the end, they had to lache a two metre gap to the finish pad, a la the early versions of the Pipe Slider in SASUKE. The time limit was 90 seconds. Sase Masayuki & Sase Natsuki unfortunately timed out at the very end due to Natsuki's panicking when placing the silver bars. The remaining group dominated the stage and achieved Kanzenseiha with ample time remaining as Sato Hiromichi & Sato Fumiya cleared with 39.14 seconds remaining, earning them the best overall results and Oji Hirofumi & Oji Kaito cleared with 16.33 seconds remaining, achieving their back-to-back Kanzenseiha.
