Intro[]
The very first Pair VIKING (officially,「真夏の熱血家族大集合 海筋肉王"バイキング"夏休みプレミアム!!」) tournament known as Pair VIKING 1 comes with a brand new format where two competitors, typically family members, working together as a pair to complete the course. It was aired on August 3, 2005. The course would undergo a drastic change to accommodate both competitors, with some obstacle are attempted by both competitors simultaneously or one at the time. In the lead up of this tournament, competitors were notified with two tasks:
- Build their own stilts and utilize them for the Bamboo Road
- Memorize the 47 Prefectures of Japan with a map for the Yonjūnana Todōfuken
Instead of the usual 100 competitors attempting the course, 140 competitors were invited into the tournament, dividing them into 70 groups. As a side note, the tournament featured commercials about the third generation Honda Stepwgn as the sponsor for the tournament featuring Sato Hiromichi and his family and other competitors. It was also the grand prize for competitors who achieved Kanzenseiha along with a cash prize of a million yen.
In the First Marine Stage, a total of nine obstacles were introduced with a time limit of 111 seconds and among them are two Shukudai obstacles: The Yonjūnana Todōfuken and Bamboo Road. Both obstacles require large amount of practice in the lead up of the tournament in order to excel on the course. The course proved to be immensely difficult, as it took 45 groups to have the very first clear by Negishi Naoto and Negishi Amon. Unga Watashi has caused havoc among all groups as most competitors are not able to stick the landing on the floating island platform. In addition, bad weather occurred prior to Sato Hiromichi's and Sato Fumiya's run, increasing the difficulty of the course. In the end, only two groups completed the course with less than ten seconds remaining. Possibly due to the low clear rate, eleven other groups were chosen to move on to the Second Adventure Stage, with the Bamboo Road serving as the cut-off.
Thirteen groups that attempted the Second Adventure Stage deals with a disadvantage of having a heavy downpour, leaving the course completely drenched which made the obstacles extremely slick causing lots of eliminations. In addition, groups are tied together using elastic ropes two metres long in a similar fashion of Nakama from Kinniku Banzuke throughout. In this stage, seven obstacles were introduced with three time limit differences based on each groups performance on the First Marine Stage. The differences are:
- Groups cleared the First Marine Stage attempts the course with 150 seconds.
- Groups cleared the Bamboo Road but failed at the Pole Stretch or Angle Thirty-five attempts the course with 145 seconds.
- Groups failed to clear the Bamboo Road attempts the course with 140 seconds.
Hammer Road caused competitors to slip while avoiding the hammers while the Dashutsu Pole ended the runs of prominent competitors like Sato Hiromichi and Yamada Katsumi. In the end, only Ōji Hirofumi and Ōji Kaito cleared the course and moved on straight to the Final Viking which took place in Kumejima, Okinawa. This is the least amount of Second Adventure Stage clears to date.
The course in the Final Viking introduced three obstacles and they are Victory Bridge, the classic Swing Mast and Victory Balanço with a time limit of 55 seconds. Both competitors instead begins at its respective starting position compared to the previous stages. The group completed the Victory Bridge with a fast pace with Ōji Kaito being first and was on standby at the Victory Balanço. Ōji Hirofumi attempts the Swing Mast with thirty-two seconds left on the clock and successfully lands on the platform with seventeen seconds left. Ōji Kaito then attempts the Victory Balanço and completed it and the group achieved Kanzenseiha with 13.1 seconds remaining.
