Ninja Warrior Germany 5 (officially known as Ninja Warrior Germany - Die stärkste Show Deutschlands 2020) was the fifth season of the International SASUKE/Ninja Warrior format in Germany. The show got recorded from May 24th to June 7th, 2020, and due to the cicumstances brought by the COVID-19-pandemic in Germany, the show was recorded in the MCC Studio (Coloneum) in Cologne, Germany for the very first regular season. Also, due to the fact that the COVID-19-pandemic were critical at that time of the recordings, the different episodes got recorded without an audience, which meant that only athletes and close relatives with a negative PCR-test could be present at the sidelines. The premiere episode of the season aired on October 2nd, 2020 at RTL. The hosts of this season, just as of the other seasons, were Frank Buschmann and Jan Köppen and the sideline reporter of this season was Laura Wontorra. This time, 330 competitors were at the start of the season, who were first spread across six different Preliminary Round episodes (with about 55 of them being in one Preliminary Round). After that, the best competitors of the six Preliminary Rounds would be spread across two Semi-finals episodes (with one half being in one Semi-finals episode) and the final competitors would then be spread across two Finals episodes which aired on November 27th and on December 4th, 2020.
Ninja Warrior Germany 5 received positive reviews from fans and viewers alike for its extended cast, format and shock value.
The Qualifications[]
The Preliminary Rounds were run over in six episodes in total. This time, there were about 55 competitors in each of the Preliminary Rounds and only the Top 16 competitors, i.e. either 16 finishers (in case of exactly 16) or the 16 furthest fastest* (in case of zero finishers), and the Top 2 female competitors (assuming that no female competitor would be in the Top 16 anyways) of each Preliminary Round would advance to the Semi-finals of the season. In addition, the Preliminary Round compeititors could again try the 5.50-meter-high Mega Wall. The participants who would manage to clear the Mega Wall on their one and only try would not only receive a 2,000 € cash prize, but would also secure their spot for the Semi-finals, which means that they would advance even if they did not finish in the Top 16 of their Preliminary Round.
Note*: In case of more than 16 finishers, only the 16 best clear times would advance, and in case of less than 16 but more than zero finishers, the furthest fastest along with the other finishers would advance.
The New Additions[]
Format Changes[]
The General Format[]
After Ninja Warrior Germany 4, which still consisted of a Semi-finals Qualification after each of the Preliminary Rounds, the Semi-finals Qualifications used from Ninja Warrior Germany 2-4 had been reomved and the format now got reverted to the format used in Ninja Warrior Germany 1. This meant that the Semi-finals Qualification and Preliminary Round got "merged", and the function of the Preliminay Rounds of this season would now be completely equivalent to the function of the Semi-finals Qualifications of Ninja Warrior Germany 2-4. However despite this aforementioned fact, the Semi-finals Qualifications of this season would still be called Preliminary Rounds.
The Course Type[]
In correlation to the above mentioned format change, the lengths and amounts of obstacles of the Preliminary Rounds now got increased significantly to 8 obstacles per Preliminary Round, making the course type of these Preliminary Rounds very similar to the course type of the Semi-finals, which would be a longer and pumpier course.
New Gimmicks[]
The Power Tower[]
For the very first time in the history of the regular competitions of Ninja Warrior Germany, there would be a post-Preliminary Round obstacle. Here, the Top 2 participants of each Preliminary Round would compete on the Power Tower at the end of their respective Preliminary Round episode. And just as in several other National/International SASUKE/Ninja Warrior shows, the Power Tower participants would compete in one direct head-to-head duel.
The Speed Pass[]
In correlation to the above mentioned, the competitor who won the Power Tower duel would not only receive a cash prize of 5,000 €, but would also receive the Speed Pass (mistakenly called Safety Pass by the producers of Ninja Warrior Germany), meaning that the competitor would automatically advance to the Finals of the season.
New Obstacles[]
Just as in the previous season, there were many "new obstacles" in this season, i.e. obstacles which have never been used in any of the previous seasons of Ninja Warrior Germany, but have been used in American Ninja Warrior before. The new obstacles of the Preliminary Rounds of this season were the following:
- Barrel Roll (Trommelwirbel), firstly used in Preliminary Round 1.

The Semi-finals[]
The New Additions[]
Format Changes[]
The General Format[]
After Ninja Warrior Germany 2-4, which consisted of one long Semi-finals episode serving as the third round of the respective competitions, the Semi-finals here would be split up into two different episodes and would serve as the second round of the competition, basically giving it the function of the Finals Qualification used in Ninja Warrior Germany 1. Each of these two Semi-finals episodes would feature its own course, which meant that Semi-finals episode 1's course would be different from that of Semi-finals episode 2, and final leaderboard that would be shown at the end of the respective episode. There were about 50 competitors (about 48 Semi-finalists and three of the six Power Tower winners) in each of the Semi-finals episodes and only the Top 25 competitors of every episode (the 25 competitiors placed in the leaderboard shown at end of their respective Semi-finals episode), i.e. either 25 finishers (in case of exactly 25) or the 25 furthest fastest* (in case of zero finishers), would advance to the Finals of the season along with the six Power Tower winners, which means that 56 athletes would qualify for the Finals.
Each of the six Power Tower winners from the Preliminary Rounds would also have a chance to compete in the Semi-finals, with the Power Tower winners of Preliminary Rounds 1-3 competing in Semi-finals 1, and the other three competing in Semi-finals 2, but it wouldn't affect each of the official seperate leaderboards, since they are already automatically qualified for the Finals.
Note*: In case of more than 25 finishers, only the 25 best finishers would advance, and in case of less than 25 but more than zero finishers, the furthest fastest along with the other finishers would advance.
New Gimmicks[]
The Mega Wall[]
In addition to the overhauled format, the 5.50-meters-Mega Wall, which only regularly appeared in the Preliminary Rounds of Ninja Warrior Germany 4, would now also be used in the Semi-finals, being placed right next to the regular Warped Wall. Participants who would manage to clear the Mega Wall on their one and only try would receive a 2,500 € cash prize. If they failed to complete the Mega Wall on their one and only try, they would be given one more attempt at the regular Warped Wall.
New Obstacles[]
Just as in the previous season, there were also a few "new obstacles" in the Finals of this season, i.e. obstacles/obstacle parts which have never been used in any of the previous regular seasons of Ninja Warrior Germany, but were used in American Ninja Warrior before. The new obstacles used in the Semi-finals of this season were the following:
- Shrinking Steps (Sprung-Tritte) - used in Semi-finals 1 & 2, Obstacle 1.
- Lunatic Ledges (Schwung-Bretter) - used in Semi-finals 2, Obstacle 2.
- Slingshot (Bungee-Flug) - used in Semi-finals 1, Obstacle 4.
- Diving Boards (Feder-Bretter) - used in Semi-finals 1 & 2, Obstacle 5.
- Snap Back (Flug-Wippen) - used in Semi-finals 1, Obstacle 6.
- Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) - used in Semi-finals 1 & 2, Obstacle 8.

The Finals[]
Here, the 56 (50 non-Speed Pass winners + six Speed Pass Winners) remaining participants would battle against the four Stages, in order to become the first winner of Ninja Warrior Germany and of a 300,000 € cash prize + the title ". Ninja Warrior Germany". Just as in the two previous seasons, if none of the remaining male participants would manage to achieve the sole Total Victory / win the show or if a female competitor would manage to win the show, the male participant who then either made it the furthest, or the furthest in the best time (in case of two or more competitors failing at the exact same point), the Last Man Standing, would receive the aforementioned title plus a 25,000 € cash prize. And just as in Ninja Warrior Germany 4, the Last Woman Standing of the season, i.e. the best female athlete of the entire season who would not manage to win the show, would also receive a 25,000 € cash prize.
The New Additions[]
Format Changes[]
The General Format[]
After the four previous seasons, in which the Finals was run over all in one episode, the Finals would now be split up into two seperate episodes, with the first Finals episode showing the First Stage, and with the second one consisting of the Second, the Third and "potentially" the Final Stage (Mount Midoriyama).
The Stage 2 & 3 Seperation[]
In addition to the above change, the Second Stage would not be directly connected to the Third Stage anymore, but would be completely sperated from it (similar to SASUKE & American Ninja Warrior). This also resulted in the removal of 30-45 second-long rest between the Stages, so if a person should clear the Second Stage within rules and time limit, they would have to wait until this Stage has been completely run over and the seperated Third Stage officially commences, instead of waiting 30-45 seconds between the Stages.
New Obstacles[]
Just as in the previous season, there were also a few "new obstacles" in the Finals of this season, i.e. obstacles/obstacle parts which have never been used in any of the previous regular seasons of Ninja Warrior Germany, but were used in American Ninja Warrior before. The new obstacles used in the Finals of this season were the following:
- Devil Steps (Steil-Treppe) - used in the First Stage, Obstacle 4.
- Bag Catch (Pendelstamm) as the second portion of Giant Cycle + Bag Catch (Rad mit Pendelstamm) - used in the First Stage, Obstacle 5.
- Lightning Bolts (Sprungstange 2.0) - used in the First Stage, Obstacle 6.
- Grim Sweeper (Säbelzahn-Flieger) as the second portion of Grim Sweeper to Cargo Net - used in the First Stage, Obstacle 9.
- Hazard Cones (Chaos-Kegel) - used in the Second Stage, Obstacle 1.
- Wall Flip Tower (Vertikale Hebebrücken) - used in the Second Stage, Obstacle 5.
- Cliffhanger 3.0 (Fingerleisten 3.0) - used in the Third Stage, Obstacle 3.
- Time Bomb (Kugel-Haken) - used in the Third Stage, Obstacle 5.
