In SASUKE 18, the first competition after Nagano Makoto's kanzenseiha, the whole course was redesigned. A new obstacle called the Shin-Cliffhanger was one of them. In this obstacle, the second ledge was shortened and was made in an incline of 12° which caused the horizontal gap between the last two ledges to increase to 1 meter. Because of that competitors must now clear the obstacle by jumping across from second ledge to the third one.

Disqualification

SASUKE 18 Nagano Makoto Cliffhanger

Makoto Nagano when he grabbed the top of the metal frame, SASUKE 18.

Nagano Makoto was the first person to attempt this obstacle, and as soon as he tried to grab the third ledge, he accidentally got hold of the top of the frame with one hand. Thus Nagano was said to go out of course and he was disqualified. He was offered a rerun by the producers, but declined because he felt he didn't deserve another try.

He was the closest to clearing the Shin-Cliff Hanger where as the other two, Nagasaki Shunsuke and Takahashi Kenji both fell on the transition, with Nagasaki trying to clear it without jumping and Takahashi losing his grip.

In future competitions

To avoid more disqualifications, panels were attached to the top of the frame in the next competition. In two competitions (SASUKE 21 and 23), Nagano completed the Shin-Cliffhanger. The obstacle lasted until SASUKE 24 which is the competition which Urushihara Yuuji achieved kanzenseiha.
