The following is a list of American Ninja Warrior obstacles and their descriptions.

Obstacles are organized based on the stage and season in which they debuted. Obstacles that returned in a different round compared to the round in which they debuted will only be counted in the latter category to avoid double-counting. However, there are a handful of exceptions:

  • If an obstacle returned with significant modifications in a different stage compared to the one in which it debuted, both versions will be listed.
  • If an obstacle debuted in the Qualifiers/Semifinals stages later appeared in those National Finals (or vice versa), both versions will be listed.
  • If an obstacle debuted has returned in a different round compared to the round in which it debuted prior to American Ninja Warrior 12, both versions will be listed.

In American Ninja Warrior 15 and American Ninja Warrior 16, the Runoffs and Safety Pass Races will not be listed as different rounds; the obstacles featured in those races were the same ones featured in Semifinals races.

Obstacle descriptions listed below do not explicitly mention off-season specials. The seasons listed include the following specials:

The obstacle descriptions offer a cursory description of the function of each obstacle, and it is meant to be paired with a picture of the obstacle. For this reason, aesthetic changes are not documented on this page, and season-to-season functional changes may be overlooked for the purpose of brevity. To determine whether or not a certain component of each obstacle will be included, all of the following three statement must be true:

  1. The obstacle's component was critical to the obstacle's completion and function. In other words, the obstacle could not have existed without this particular component. For example, the Cargo Crossing's section includes the lache bar that was placed at the obstacle's end, as the obstacle was designed for competitors to complete the transition from the swinging cargo net to the bar. However, although Rolling Thunder included a lache bar at the obstacle's beginning, it will not be listed because it served as nothing more than a medium to reach the actual wheel; in other words, Rolling Thunder could have existed without the lache bar.
  2. The obstacle's component was an important focus of the obstacle. For example, Pretzel Twist includes a rotating wall at its end, requiring competitors to have the body awareness and lower body strength to avoid hitting the wall. which was the difference between success and failure for some competitors. Lasso Launch included a similar wall, but it had no impact on competitors' chances on the obstacle. As such, the former obstacle's section will include the rotating wall, but the latter will not.
  3. The previous two statements were true in the context in which the obstacle debuted. In other words, some obstacle components were critical for completing a certain obstacle and was a central focus for a particular obstacle, but may not have been for another obstacle. For instance, Jump Hang's section will include the mini-tramp since it was required for competitors to reach the cargo net. Furthermore, Jump Hang debuted in American Ninja Warrior 3, which heavily tested agility and dynamic movement. On the other hand, Salmon Roll, which debuted in American Ninja Warrior 14, will not mention the mini-tramp at the beginning of the obstacle. While it was required for competitors to reach the actual bar, the obstacle could have existed without it if the bar was placed closer to competitors or if an acceptable substitute was provided to reach the bar. Furthermore, the presence of the mini-tramp was not crucial within the season, as obstacles often tested precision and endurance.

Furthermore, any description that includes the words "tilting," "spinning," "rotating," "swinging," or similar phrases indicates that these words are triggered by a competitor's weight, momentum, or by activating another part of the obstacle unless otherwise stated. For example, Log Runner's description states that competitors must run across several rotating logs. These logs do not rotate on their own; they only rotate when competitors step on them.

Over the years, there have been several significant modifications:

  • In ANW 7, ninjas had to make a Crazy Cliffhanger transition to a hanging board with a Cliffhanger ledge that they must traverse from left to right.
  • In ANW 8, ninjas had to plant their feet on a footrest below the fourth ledge, make a 180-degree jump to a floating ledge with Cliffhanger ledges that they must traverse from left to right, make a lateral lache to the second hanging board, and make a Crazy Cliffhanger jump back to the final ledge of the original wall.
  • In ANW 10, the wall was replaced with smaller transparent Plexiglass walls, the fourth ledge was divided into two smaller sections that required more but smaller moves, and the gap between the hanging boards was decreased.
  • In ANW 11, the footrest and first hanging board was removed, more ledges were added to the Plexiglass walls, the final ledge was shifted to the left, and the remaining hanging board was divided into two smaller boards. Ninjas now must traverse the Ultimate Cliffhanger until they reach the final ledge and make a Crazy Cliffhanger jump to the hanging boards.
