KUNOICHI 1 (officially,「KUNOICHI2001冬」, literally KUNOICHI 2001 Winter, also known as KUNOICHI Muscle Ranking Special) was the first KUNOICHI tournament that took place at Mt. Midoriyama.
Origin[]
With the previous era of KUNOICHI being scrapped, the producers came up with a reboot of KUNOICHI in late 2001 for a winter Kinniku Banzuke special.
Within weeks, 70 competitors were scouted to complete in this tournament by visiting various colleges, pubs, everyday workplaces, and as well as a preliminary trials held through MUSCLE GYM segments on Kinniku Banzuke. For the first time, KUNOICHI was also hosted outdoors and the course was multi-staged.
While it was hoped that the results would be better than KUNOICHI 1999 and 2000, the newly designed obstacles were so difficult that only two women, Yusa Masami and Yamada Miho, were able to clear the 1st STAGE. In the 2nd STAGE, they both failed the first obstacle, leaving the remainder of the Stage untouched, and the FINAL STAGE unknown.
