He first competed in the last qualifying episode. His run was digested, but it was shown that he cleared the course in his rookie debut in 12th place. He later competed in the second semifinals episode. His run there was also digested, but it was shown that he failed the eighth obstacle, Box Office. He placed 10th overall and advanced to the national finals.
Prior to the national finals, Grant had been in a bike accident, and was doubtful he would be able to compete. However, he was able to compete in Las Vegas, and his run was digested for a third time. He put up a gutsy run, almost failing the dismount of Three Ring Circus and missing his first attempt on the Warped Wall. With time running low, he had to choose The High Road. He caught the ring with one hand and finished Stage One with 06.25 seconds left. On Stage Two, his run was digested for a fourth time, but he made it to the Hammer Drop. He managed to get on top of the hammer, but failed the rope grab, ending his rookie season.
