Watanabe debuted at the Denver Qualifiers where he received a fully televised run. Watanabe cleared the course in steady fashion, finishing with a time of 1:50:03. He placed 23rd overall. His fluff piece was centered around his Olympic appearances and how he'd translate his athleticism to the course.
Watanabe would receive another fully televised run for the City Finals. He would struggle on the Salmon Ladder and the energy spent there would result in his failure of the Floating Stairs. He got halfway through the stairs before pumping out. His time was not enough for the National Finals, but he would receive a Wild Card spot from producers.
In Vegas, it's known that Watanabe competed and was present. His result has never been confirmed by NBC or himself, as it was all cut. It's believed that he failed the Warped Wall, an obstacle he didn't look too strong on in either qualifiers or semi-finals.
