ANW8 Floating Steps

American Ninja Warrior 8's Floating Steps in Indianapolis

ANW9 Floating Steps

American Ninja Warrior 9's Floating Steps in Los Angeles

The Floating Steps is an obstacle, firstly introduced as the first obstacle on American Ninja Warrior 8 in every qualifying city, replacing the Quintuple Steps from the past three American Ninja Warrior seasons. It is similar to the Quintuple Steps, but there are a few key differences:

  • There are still five steps, with a 5-ft gap between each step, but the steps are much smaller and steeper, and each step is higher than the previous step.
  • After the fifth step, competitors must jump and grab the hanging rope (similar to the Step Slider), and swing to the landing platform to clear the obstacle.

Like the Quintuple Steps, several competitors typically failed on the obstacles due to rushing the obstacle or losing the grip from the rope. While this usually occurred with rookies, there have been a few instances where veterans have been eliminated by the obstacle, including:

During American Ninja Warrior 8's Los Angeles qualifiers, one competitor (Luke Matthews) tried an interesting technique by only running on one side of the steps, skipping the second and fourth steps. However, he botched the landing when he failed to get a firm grasp on the rope and failed. The attempt was similar to another failed technique on the Quintuple Steps during American Ninja Warrior 7's San Pedro (Military) qualifiers, when Kevin Jones ran on one side of the steps as well, which just like Matthews, resulted in an ill-timed landing.

During Celebrity Ninja Warrior: Red Nose Day 2, the rope was placed closer from the fifth step, in order to make the obstacles easier for celebrity competitors.

ANW10 Floating Steps

For the Floating Steps on American Ninja Warrior 10, there was a minor modification to the obstacle, in which the third step was placed steeper than the other four steps. Also, the obstacle only appeared during city qualifiers, as it was replaced by the Archer Steps during city finals round. Later, the Shrinking Steps replaced the Floating Steps as the first obstacle during city qualifiers round on American Ninja Warrior 11.

A similarly made obstacle to this one was used as part of American Ninja Warrior 12's Power Tower at the end of each qualifying episode and the first round of the finals' playoff bracket. This Floating Steps version in Power Tower later appeared on Power Tower in several formats, such as Australian Ninja Warrior 5, Ninja Warrior France (season 6 and 7), Ninja Warrior Israel 5, and also served as a obstacle during Preliminary Rounds in Ninja Warrior Germany 7.

In Ninja Warrior Germany 7, a new modification of the Floating Steps, locally called Dreisprung (literally: Triple Jump) appeared as the third obstacle in every Preliminary Round and in the Finals' Stage One. The obstacle featured three steps that were arranged in a leftwards curve pattern, making it very similar to the Floating Steps portion of the Power Tower in American Ninja Warrior 12. Because of this, the step structure was reverted back to the one used in Ninja Warrior Germany 3. After the third step, the competitors are required to jump to the second portion, an obstacle that could vary from Preliminary Round to Preliminary Round, and in the First Stage of the Finals it was a completely different obstacle than the ones in the Preliminary Rounds:

FS Incident

Lavi Malavski slipped and fell into the water on the Floating Steps in Ninja Warrior Israel 2

An interesting incident happened on this obstacle on Lavi Malavski's attempt, when he slipped and fell into the water due to the starting platform not being wiped dry after a previous competitor's attempt. This forced the producers to grant a second attempt on the Heat, and there was a red mat placed on the starting platform for him to wipe his shoes. However, in his second attempt, he still failed on the third step in the Floating Steps.

NWI4 Floating Steps

Ninja Israel 4's modified Floating Steps

Then, on Ninja Warrior Israel 4, the Floating Steps re-appeared as the first obstacle in all Heats with a major overhaul compared to the one used in Ninja Warrior Israel 2 and other versions of this obstacle:

  • The obstacle now consisted of seven steps instead of only five.
  • Four steps in the right side were coloured in red, while three steps in the left side were coloured in blue, unlike all of the other versions of this obstacle, on which all steps were coloured in red.
  • All seven steps were on the exact same height level, rather than each step being higher up than the previous step, similar to Godantobi or Rokudantobi.
  • Also, unlike American Ninja Warrior, all seven steps were turned upside down, and the step structures was modified to the one used in Ninja Warrior Germany 3.
  • There was a rope as a medium to reach the landing platform, just like American Ninja Warrior's version.

Just like American Ninja Warrior 12, a similarly made obstacle to this one was used as part of Ninja Warrior Israel 5's Power Tower in most Heats and Semifinals.

Later in the same season, the Floating Steps, this time locally called Косые Ступени 2.0 (literally Oblique Steps 2.0) appeared as the first obstacle in the Finals' Stage One. Hence the local name, the number of steps has been reduced to three, and the last two steps have been replaced by a rope to help competitors reach the landing platform, making this version slightly similar to the American Ninja Warrior version.
