ANW14 - QF EP 4 - Final Frontier

American Ninja Warrior 14's Final Frontier

The Final Frontier is an obstacle, firstly introduced as the fifth obstacle in the final two episodes of qualifiers in American Ninja Warrior 14.

The obstacle features an I-shaped bar and four circular orbits which differ in sizes.

Competitors first have to jump off a mini-tramp to reach an I-shaped bar placed onto a V-shaped bar embedded on a small sphere. From there, competitors must navigate through the orbits by moving the bar across the tracks in a similar manner to the Cane Lane. They must apply their weight on one side of the bar to keep it in place of the track. Once they reach the end of the fourth orbit, they must make a transition to another V-shaped bar embedded on a small sphere and make a dismount to the landing platform.

A total of 20 competitors failed on this obstacle during the fourth qualifiers episode, including big names and veterans such as: Donovan Metoyer, Tyler Yamauchi, Isabella Wakeham, Barclay Stockett, Anabella Heinrichs, Jaelyn Bennett, Dan Polizzi, Isaiah Thomas, Ryan Meeks, and Sem Garay. Only eight competitors could complete this obstacle, the number only be beaten by V Formation (during American Ninja Warrior 13's first and second qualifiers episodes) and Hourglass Drop (during American Ninja Warrior 7's Venice Beach qualifiers). Among the finishers, surprisingly including Katie Bone, the only woman to complete this obstacle and later the whole course.

During the fifth qualifiers episode, a total of 21 failed on this obstacle including many notable competitors such as: Lance Pekus, Tyler Kurtzhals, Tiana Webberley, Mady Howard, Paris Juarez, Brian Kretsch, Verdale Benson, David Funk, and Evan Andrews. However, likely due to the field of competitors being stronger, 18 competitors managed to complete this obstacle. Additionally unlike the previous qualifiers, two women (Brittney Durant and Izabella Adkins) managed to complete the obstacle.

Ninja Warrior France 8's Final Frontier (Interstellar)

In Ninja Warrior France 8, the Final Frontier, locally called Interstellar, appeared as the eighth and penultimate obstacle in the Second Part of the Second Stage of the Finals. In its first appearance outside of American Ninja Warrior, the obstacle differed in some aspects, compared to the original version used in American Ninja Warrior 14:

  • All four spheres were painted red, not representing planets of the solar system,
  • The I-shaped bar has curved ends for its top bar,
  • In order to navigate from the third to the fourth orbit, the competitors must shift the I-shaped bar to the right, rather than to the left,
  • The second V-shaped bar was replaced by a lachรฉ bar, which effectively served as the rest between this obstacle and the following obstacle, the Flying Bar, and;
  • There were two additional decorative spheres installed.

During this Second Stage, the obstacle proved to be quite brutal, with five out of the eight competitors who attempted this obstacle failing it, including top-veterans, such as Michel Lajic, Maxime Ben-Medjani, the two-time Finalist Iliann Cherif and even the Last Man Standing of Ninja Warrior France 7, Charles Poujade. At the end of the day, only Jean Tezenas du Montcel, Matthias Noirel and Clรฉment Gravier went on to clear this obstacle and the entire stage afterwards.

The obstacle made a reappearance in the Ninja Warrior France: Clash of Nations as the third obstacle of Stage Three. It was intended to function similarly to Ninja Warrior France 8's Final Frontier, but there was a malfunction that rendered the obstacle unbeatable and unusable. To remedy this problem, the producers allowed the competitors to grab onto the orbits and to shimmy across them instead of using & navigating the I-shaped bar. This effectively reduced the difficulty of the obstacle drastically as all nine competitors who attempted it cleared it.

Trivia[]

  • The name of this obstacle comes from a line spoken in the title sequence of Star Trek: The Original Series, which describes outer space as the "final frontier".
  • The original idea for this obstacle was a series of nine circular orbits representing the solar system but was later reduced to four. Although, some planets were still represented, with the second orbit resembling Jupiter, and the third orbit resembling either Uranus or Neptune.

Competitors' Success Rate[]

  • All results based on the NBC/TF1 broadcast and external information found.
