Brett Sims (ブレッド・スイムス) is a musician and ninja coach. He has been competing in ninja competitions since the introduction of the American Ninja Challenge in 2007.

SASUKE[]

He was the runner-up of the first American preliminary competition, the American Ninja Challenge. Because of this, he qualified to compete in SASUKE 19. There, he made it to the Jumping Spider but fell as many did that day.

He was invited back to compete in the following tournament, SASUKE 20 as well. There, he got farther, despite competing with an injured foot. However, due to his injury he struggled on the Spider Walk portion of the Jumping Spider, and he timed out on the Soritatsu Kabe.

Sims entered into the American Ninja Challenge 4 but his entry video did not make it into the top 3.

American Ninja Warrior[]

American Ninja Warrior 1[]

Sims also competed in the American Ninja Warrior trials. He had a brisk early pace, becoming the first person of the day to clear the Spider Jump. However, he shockingly failed the Pipe Slider when on the second jolt, the bar became uneven and the right side slipped off the tracks, ending his run.

American Ninja Warrior 2[]

He competed again in American Ninja Warrior 2. He started strong, but shockingly failed the Bridge of Blades in qualifying, as he didn't get a good push off the final pane and didn't have the momentum to make it to the platform.

American Ninja Warrior 4[]

Sims returned in American Ninja Warrior 4, but he failed on the Swing Circle like many that day.

American Ninja Warrior 6[]

He then came back for American Ninja Warrior 6 in Miami and for the first time, he beat the qualifying course, finishing with the 12th fastest time.

In the Miami finals Course, he went out on the Dancing Stones after slipping on one of them, ultimately missing his chance at making it to Vegas.

American Ninja Warrior 7[]

In his submission video for Season 9, Brett mentioned that he did compete in Orlando on American Ninja Warrior 7. His run was cut from broadcast, but it was known he failed the Paddle Boards.

American Ninja Warrior 8[]

He also competed in American Ninja Warrior 8, clearing the Atlanta qualifiers. He was later one of the few competitors to finish the city finals course, making it his first time to make it to Las Vegas. He ultimately timed out at Warped Wall in Stage One after several failed attempts to get up the wall.

American Ninja Warrior 9[]

Brett Sims at the Atlanta Finals - American Ninja Warrior 2016

Sims has confirmed on running American Ninja Warrior 9 after his performance last year. His run was cut in qualifying, but he finished the Daytona course with the 7th fastest time. His run in the city finals was digested but it was shown that he failed the Salmon Ladder, despite using the cross grip, not making it back to the national finals.

Additionally, Sims also participated in the obstacle-design challenge this season, and was one of the challenge winners, designing the ninth obstacle of the Kansas City finals, known as the Iron Maiden.

American Ninja Warrior 10[]

Sims returned to the sport in American Ninja Warrior 10 in Miami. He was one of only 11 to complete the qualifying course, placing fourth. Sims had made a bet with training partner Ryan Stratis, stating that whoever fails the course has to shave off his beard. Fortunately, neither of them needed to, as both finished the course.

His city finals run was digested but it was shown that he got revenge on the Salmon Ladder, and managed to clear the whole course and placed 2nd overall. Because he and Ryan Stratis completed the course, the bet continued in Stage One of the national finals.

Eventually, Sims failed the Double Dipper on Stage One. He lost the bet to Stratis, who made it to Jeep Run before failing. During broadcast, he was shown getting his beard shaved after both of their runs in Vegas. His beard would eventually grow back before American Ninja Warrior 11, where they would face off on the bet again.

It is also notable the Sims had ran the course in Miami on his birthday. The taping of the Miami course took place on April 14, taking place during Sims' 32nd birthday.

American Ninja Warrior 11[]

He returned in Atlanta on American Ninja Warrior 11 where his run was cut in qualifying, but he finished the course with the 9th fastest time. His city finals run was digested, but like last season, he finished the course, placing 4th overall. Him and Ryan Stratis are starting their beard bet again after last season's competition, so just like ANW 10, the bet will continue into Stage One of Las Vegas.

On Stage One in Vegas, Sims surprisingly failed the second obstacle, Spin Your Wheels, making it the fifth time that he failed Stage One in either SASUKE or ANW. He once again lost the bet to Stratis, who cleared the course. During the broadcast, he was shown having his beard getting shaved by fellow competitor Lucio Battista into some mutton chops.

American Ninja Warrior 13[]

Brett did not compete in American Ninja Warrior 12 likely due to COVID's shrotened season, marking just the third time in ANW where he did not compete. Despite not competing on American Ninja Warrior 12, Brett still made an appearance on the virtual sideline as he and Grace watched Bootie Cothran's run. After not getting the shot to compete last year, Brett came back to compete during the third round of qualifying.

Brett then had ten black stripes on his arm to celebrate this being his tenth season. He competed in the third round of qualifying. His run was digested, but he made it through Split Decision which had knocked out his wife, Grace Sims earlier. He later made some big moves on Pretzel Twist and tried the Mega Wall which he was unable to compete but still made it all the way to the buzzer on the regular Warped Wall. This was Brett’s fifth straight time completing the qualifying course, and he had the 11th and second-slowest time in the third round.

In the semifinals, Brett competed in the third episode. Although his run was once again digested, he completed the semifinals course entirely, placing 5th and being one of six finishers to do so.

Brett then returned for Stage One where he wanted for to clear Stage One for the first time in his ninja career. Brett flew across the first half of the course, getting past Swinging Blades, the successor to the Spin Your Wheels that eliminated him in American Ninja Warrior 11, as well as the Double Dipper which eliminated him in American Ninja Warrior 10, then got past the Warped Wall which eliminated him in American Ninja Warrior 8. Unfortunately, he got caught up on the Fly Hooks and timed out on the cargo net, ending his best run ever at the national finals.

American Ninja Warrior 14[]

Brett added another black stripe on his arm to celebrate his eleventh season, competing in the first qualifying episode. His run was digested, but he cleared his sixth straight qualifying course with the 5th fastest time. Brett later competed in the first semifinals episode. His run there was also digested, but he shockingly failed on Air Surfer (an obstacle that he cleared during the qualifiers in the previous season), going out on the third obstacle. This marked this first time since Season 9 that he had failed on a semifinals course, and subsequently the first time since that same season that he didn't advance to the national finals.

American Ninja Warrior 15[]

Sims competed in the eighth and final round (seventh episode) of qualifying. It was revealed that his wife Grace is pregnant and expecting soon, and was seen in the virtual sidelines cheering him on. As always, he had a new black stripe on his shoulder, totalling twelve, which represented the number of seasons he has competed on. His run was digested but it was shown that he completed his ninth consecutive qualifying course, placing 7th overall. For the first time since American Ninja Warrior 11, he competed alongside his training partner Ryan Stratis, who also completed the course.

He raced Brandon Thomas in the semifinals, and while both completed the course, Thomas was faster and won. Although he did not win, Sims still advanced to the national finals as he was the top non-winner.

On Stage One, Brett spent a ridiculous amount of time on The Gambler, spinning on the roulette wheel, and that caught up to him, with him eventually falling on Thread the Needle. Unfortunately, he did not make the Top 24 by the end of Stage One, but he was able to tie with his performance American Ninja Warrior 13 for his best yet.

SASUKE Vietnam[]

SASUKE Vietnam 2[]

Sims once again competed in a competition outside the US; this time, he competed on SASUKE Vietnam 2, wearing #2017. However, he made a fatal mistake and shockingly failed right at the second obstacle, Log Grip. His run was digested.

Trivia[]

  • Sims is one of two obstacle-design winners in American Ninja Warrior 9 to also compete on the course, along with Kevin Carbone. Unlike Carbone, however, Sims is the only one to have competed beforehand. Both him and Carbone coincidentally competed in Daytona Beach on the same season.
  • Sims is the sixth competitor whose birthday occurred while running the course, after Cheetah Platt in ANW2's qualifying course, Natalie Strasser and Jake Smith in ANW 4's qualifying course, Daniel Gil in ANW8's Oklahoma City qualifying course, and Halei Jo Fuller in ANW10's Miami qualifying course.
  • It should be noted, that him clearing the city finals course of American Ninja Warrior 11, American Ninja Warrior 13, and American Ninja Warrior 15 is the first, second, and third time he made it to the National Finals round of ANW in an odd-numbered season as he failed to qualify for SASUKE in American Ninja Warrior 1, didn't compete in either American Ninja Warrior 3 or American Ninja Warrior 5, and failed to qualify for Vegas in American Ninja Warrior 7 (qualifying) and American Ninja Warrior 9 (city finals).
  • Brett Sims also created a model obstacle which has similar resemblance to the Vertical Limit Burst. His model consisted of two large cylinders that rotate simultaneously, carrying a total of six ledges. Competitors would have to rotate the cylinder every time they transitioned to a new ledge.
