American Ninja Warrior 3 was the third season of American Ninja Warrior, which served as the American qualifiers for SASUKE 27. For the second straight season, Matt Iseman returned as the host, Jimmy Smith returned as the co-host, and Alison Haislip returned on her third season overall and second as the sideline reporter. The season premiered on July 31, 2011.

This season was notable for being the last American Ninja Warrior season to hold qualifiers for SASUKE, as the competition format on the next season was drastically changed.

Qualifying[]

In the Qualifying round, competitors must complete 6 obstacles and hit the buzzer at the very end of the course. The 30 fastest competitors who could complete the course would advance to the Semifinal round. If fewer than 30 competitors completed the course, the competitors who advanced the furthest and fastest would advance to the Semifinal.

Although there was no predefined time limit, a dynamic one was applied: once 30 competitors had finished, the time limit for each run was the finishing time of the competitor holding 30th place at that moment.

Boot Camp Finals[]

Competitors[]

The 15 competitors who performed the best in the Semifinals would advance to the Boot Camp Finals, held in a remote mountain area in California. These competitors were divided into three teams: the Red Dragons, captained by the competitor who performed the best in the Semifinals; the White Tigers, captained by the competitor who performed the second-best; and the Blue Monkeys, captained by the competitor who performed the third-best. Each team had five members; each team captain would take turns selecting the remaining four members (similar to how teams for a schoolyard game are picked).

Prior to Boot Camp finals, Michael Zernow suffered an injury while training and withdrew from the competition. Jake Smith (who finished in 16th place during semifinal) took his place.

Red Dragons White Tigers Blue Monkeys

Competition Format[]

Boot Camp Finals took place over four days. During the first three days, the following rounds were utilized:

  • Pressure Challenge
    • Each team must elect one person to tackle an obstacle. While the host, Matt Iseman, would brief all of the competitors on the general skills that the obstacle tested, he would not show them the actual obstacle; that would occur after each team nominates one person for this challenge.
    • The team member representing each time would tackle the obstacle. The competitor with the worst overall performance would earn punishment for the entire members of his respective team.
    • The losing team must perform a menial task and carry heavy objects to the site of the Team Relay course, while the other two teams were allowed to practice on obstacle replicas until the losing team finishes their punishment.
  • Team Relay
    • All of the competitors were presented with a handful of obstacle replicas.
    • Each team must send all of its competitors to attempt the replicas, carrying a heavy object in between obstacles.
    • If a competitor fails to complete an obstacle within the allowed number of attempts, they would receive a time penalty added to their total time.
    • Once a competitor attempts all of the obstacles, they must carry the heavy object back to the start line, which marks the end of their run. Immediately afterwards, their teammate must begin their run. This process continues until everyone has run the course.
      • During Days 2-4, some teams will have competitors missing as a result of prior eliminations. As such, these teams will select people to run multiple times until their total runs equal the number of the team with the highest competitors. For example, if the team with the most number of competitors has 5 members, the remaining teams must have 5 runs. Each competitor must still attempt the course at least once.
    • Once a team has sent all of its members to attempt the course, their final time, including time penalties, will be totaled. The team who completed the Team Relay course in the slowest time must elect 2 of their members to face the Heavenly Ropes.
  • Heavenly Ropes
    • The Heavenly Ropes consisted of a side-to-side Rope Climb, with a bell at the top of each rope.
    • The two competitors selected to take on this stage must climb up the rope and ring the bell at the top. Whoever could do this first would remain in the competition, while the loser would be eliminated from the competition.

The final day of competition had the following modifications:

  • The Pressure Challenge and punishment portion were removed. As such, the remaining 12 competitors could spend time practicing obstacles for the Team Relay, which includes more obstacles.
  • Competitors would not carry any heavy object in between the Team Relay obstacles.
  • The team who completes the Team Relay course with the fastest final time would earn the privilege of sending all of their members to represent America in SASUKE 27.
  • The two losing teams must elect 2 members each to face the Heavenly Ropes. Those who were not selected to face the Heavenly Ropes were also granted a spot in SASUKE 27.
  • The four competitors who were selected to face the Heavenly Ropes would have one attempt to climb the rope in the fastest time. There were two heats, with competitors from opposing teams facing each other.
  • The 2 competitors who rang the bell in the fastest time, regardless of whether or not they beat their opponent in their heat, would represent America in SASUKE 27, while the losers would be eliminated from the competition.

Day 1[]

Pressure Challenge[]

The Pressure Challenge for Day 1 was called the Net Climb, which consists of a cargo net with 25 flags attached to it. Competitors must climb across the net and collect as many flags as possible. Any flags that drop to the ground do not count. If a competitor touches the ground, their turn ends automatically. The competitor who collected the fewest flags would earn punishment for their entire team, in which each member of the losing team must bring several logs from one side of mountain area to the training ground (Team Relay course).

Team Name Result Notes Losing Team
Blue Monkeys Paul Kasemir 14 flags Blue Monkeys
White Tigers Brian Orosco 16 flags
Red Dragons Travis Rosen 16 flags Fell before the time ran out.

The Blue Monkeys' punishment was to take apart a fence built from logs and carry the logs back to the site of the Team Relay.

Team Relay[]

The Team Relay' for Day 1 consists of the following obstacles:

    • Number of maximum attempts allowed: 1
    • Time penalty: 2 minutes
  • Warped Wall
    • Number of maximum attempts allowed: 1
    • Time penalty: 1 minute

Each competitor must carry several logs to each obstacle. The first competitor on each team to run the course would carry the lightest logs, and the weight increases with the run order so that the last competitor to run the course would carry the heaviest logs.

Competitors must swing across the chains and reach the landing platform without touching the ground. To increase the difficulty, each competitor must wear a 40-pound backpack while attempting the obstacle. The competitor who reached the landing platform in the slowest time (or reached the least chains if two or more competitors failed to reach the landing platform) would earn punishment for their entire team. in which each member of the losing team must bring several tires from one side of the mountain area to the training ground (Team Relay course).

The Pressure Challenge for Day 3 was called the Bungee Rope Climb, which consisted of 9 hanging ropes of descending height and 5 bells placed between the ropes. Competitors must swing across the ropes, and ring the bell in the order in which they are approached. Once competitors reach one end of the obstacle, they must travel in the opposite direction, switching back and forth. If competitors fall to the ground or skipped a rope or bell, their run automatically ends. The competitor who rang the fewest bells (or rang the bells in the longest time if multiple competitors ring the same number of bells) would earn punishment for their entire team.

Just like the previous season, all representatives follows the same rules as the other SASUKE competitors: to advance to the next stage, competitors must complete all of the obstacles within the given time limit. Anyone who failed would be eliminated from the competition.

On this season, the prize for achieving Total Victory was a K-Swiss endorsement deal worth US$500,000. However, if no one could accomplish this feat, the competitor who progressed the farthest would be crowned the Last Man Standing. Also, the American representatives' runs aired on August 22nd, 2011 - 6 weeks before the official airdate of SASUKE 27.
